Hamilton Southeastern classrooms employ many tools and resources to foster deep learning and the development of 21st-century skills. Among these are digital tools and resources.

When digital devices are used in HSE classrooms, they serve as learning and creation tools (Jonassen, D., Carr, C., & Yeah, H. 1998). HSE is a 1:1 school corporation; that is, each student in grades K-12 uses a personal digital device as a learning tool.

Rental iPad Return Guide

Device Specification

All incoming students in K-2, 5-7, and 9-11 will be issued an iPad at the start of the school year. There is no rental fee at Hamilton Southeastern Schools. Students in these grades are not eligible to bring your own (BYO) devices.

K-8th

iPad models (excluding iPad Pros and iPad Minis) 8th generation and newer are approved devices. Models subject to change depending on state and testing requirements.
Families with students enrolling in 3rd-4th and 8th grades may provide their own iPad or use an HSE-provided iPad. Technology forms must be filled out in Skyward.

9th-12th

Families of students enrolling in 12th grade may provide their own device or use an HSE-provided MacBook, which includes a charging brick and cord. Technology forms must be filled out in Skyward.

Student Email Accounts

Will my student have an email account? HSE Schools provides students with a Microsoft Office 365 account, which includes email, calendar, and cloud storage (OneDrive). This account also includes the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) with up to 5 FREE downloads per student to install on personal devices and home computers/laptops. Email is disabled in grades PK-4, and students in grades 5-8 will only be able to email HSE employees.

My student has forgotten his/her password for the school-created account. What is the procedure? For account password resets, please have your student contact their building's technology specialist.

Apps

Rental Devices will have all necessary apps already available to students.

Can we put our own personal apps on a rented device? No. HSE manages and supervises all app installations on HSE-provided devices.

How do I know which apps to put on the iPad? Each course has unique needs, so a variety of apps will be needed. Please reach out to the students' instructors with any questions. Generally, students will need the Respondus LockDown Browser app, Microsoft apps such as Outlook, Word, and OneDrive, as well as a reliable internet browser - Safari or Chrome are recommended.

Device Safety and Security

What happens if a device gets stolen? Students and families are to report the theft of a rental device immediately to their Building Administrator and the Building Technology Specialist of their school. Families should file a police report if a personally owned device (BYOD) is stolen.

How does the school ensure the safety and security of devices and prevent theft? It is everyone’s responsibility to remain vigilant in keeping devices safe and secure. Families are responsible for activating this feature on BYOD. This feature only works if enabled on the device, if the device is connected to Wi-Fi, and if it has a battery charge.

How does the district address wear and tear on rented devices? The district collects HSE-provided devices each summer for students in grades K-8. Similar to the process used with textbook wear and tear, necessary repairs will occur before returning devices to students.

If a student damages or steals another student’s device, who is liable? Student Handbook policies in regard to vandalism or purposefully damaging someone else’s property are followed.

Setting up iPads

BYOD Users Only

Install Lightspeed Certificates (Lightspeed is required on all devices to access the internet on district property).

Visit http://lightspeed.hseschools.org/byod
Make sure there is no 's' following http
Select device type from the drop-down menu
Download the certificate. Make sure it is called ProxyCertificate. Any other certificates will not work.
Follow instructions provided on the page*
If you are unable to install the certificate, please have your student(s) visit the building Technology Specialist.

*For MacBooks & Windows, please ensure the certificate is in the System Trusted Root, not Login. For all, please ensure you are trusting the certificate after it downloads.

Returning iPads

Items to be Returned

iPad
School-issued iPad case.

Students will receive a charging brick and cord when issued their first device. This is for the student to keep and use throughout their time at HSE. The brick and cord will not be returned at the end of each year. Each student will only receive one brick and one cord.

Prior to Returning the Device

Carefully remove iPad from cover.
Remove any stickers, paper, tape, etc. from the iPad & cover, and clean any remaining residue. Do not use any liquid adhesive removers.
Use a soft cloth with no cleaners or liquids to wipe all surfaces of the iPad & the cover.
Take a picture of the rental iPad, with the iPad turned on to show student’s login information, make sure the picture is date/time stamped. This is to assist in verifying the condition of iPad at the time of return.
Carefully place iPad back in the cover.
Do not reset the device. The Technology Specialist accepting the returned devices will require the student to re-enroll their rental device at the time of return if the device is reset.

Remove the Passcode and any Restrictions on the Device

Open settings.
Tap touch ID & passcode.
Enter passcode.
Tap turn off passcode.
Reenter passcode
Tap turn off.
Tap screen time.
Tap turn off screen time.
Enter screen time password if prompted.
Tap turn off screen time.

Return the Device

Bring the device to school.
Return the device to the Building Technology Specialist.
Receive the *return receipt indicating obvious damaged status.

*Further detailed inspections will occur post return and charges may be applied if damage is discovered.
